Religious conversion was followed by high expectations to shift one’s life experience from being a member of a persecuted minority, narrowed in economic opportunities, to becoming a member of the predominant society. In what way did undergoing baptism open financial doors that were former closed to pre-modern Jews, and in what manner were their former professional identities preserved? Focusing on converts documented in the Regensburg‘s archives, the talk will examine change and continuity in the professional lives of these individuals and their milieu.
